Select & Assign Model Data Sets

Ribbon buttons under Plug Into BIM tab.

This tool is intended to streamline the process of assigning standardized data to Revit model elements

 

Dialog box overview: Select Model Data Sets

  • Data Set source file: Full path to custom Data Set file
  • Browse: Select custom Data Set file containing company-client standardized information for Revit model elements

Custom Data Sets must follow the same data structure as Revit Keynotes files and subsequently saved as an Excel file (Parent – Child level).

RevitKeynotes_Metric data structure is a perfect example to follow.

  • Type Parameter: Selecting this radio button you will filter Project Parameters by Type. Only Shared Parameters will be shown.
  • Instance Parameter: Selecting this radio button you will filter Project Parameters by Instance. Only Shared Parameters will be shown.
  • Choose CODE mapping parameter: Drop down list with all Project Parameters filtered by Type or Instance depending on the radio button selected. Remember: Only Shared Parameters will be shown.
  • Choose DESCRIPTION mapping parameter: Drop down list with all Project Parameters filtered by Type or Instance depending on the radio button selected. Remember: Only Shared Parameters will be shown.
  • Rules in use: This table shows all saved rules in the current Project with relevant information about parameter names, types and Data Set file names and paths
  • Add Rule: Allows to set new rules as long as they do not already match with existing ones
  • Delete Rule: Delete the currently selected rule in table
  • Close: Exit the Dialog Box
  • Default file path: This field will show the path where the external file has been created. This file will contain all the information you provided during the Select Model Data Sets configuration. Relationship between Data Sets and Project Parameters.

Possible scenarios:

    • If  Workshared project: The external file will search the Central Model location*.
    • If Standalone project: The external file will search the Project file location.
    • If Detached or Not Saved: The tool will prompt you to save the project before continuing.

* When it comes to Workshared projects, this information must be accessible for all team members and new ones too. This way new Local Files will show the latest information related to this tool.

 

Dialog box overview: Assign Model Data Sets

  • Select Data Set: This field will show the selected Data Set file name from the drop down list
  • Change Data Set: This check box will enable the user to select another Data Set file from the drop down list
  • Make current: This button will establish the selected Data Set file as the current data information
  • CODE Parameter: This field shows the parameter name used to store CODE data
  • DESCRIPTION Parameter: This field shows the parameter name used to store DESCRIPTION data
  • Type-Instance Parameter: This field shows if selected parameters for CODE and DESCRIPTION are of Type or Instance
  • Data Set view: Tree view table with Data Set information
  • Enable new Code & Description values: This check box will enable the user to set custom CODE and DESCRIPTION values but this fields will be marked with an (*) for future reviews and acceptance
  • New Code value: Write custom Code value
  • New Description value: Write custom Description value
  • Select elements by filter: Select elements by Category, Family and Type

Recommended for Type Parameters

      • Select Category: Drop down list with all Model Categories in use
      • All elements of Category: This check box will select all instances in model that passes the selected Category filter
      • Select Family: Drop down list with all families in model that passes the selected Category filter
      • Show Types: This button will select all instances in model that passes Category and Family filters
      • Family Types in Model: List Box with all Family Types in Model that passes Category and Family filters
  • Select elements by selection: Select elements by multiple selection in model

Recommended for Instance Parameters

      • Select Category: Drop down list with all Model Categories in use
      • Multiple Selection: This button allows users to select multiple elements in Model that passes the Category filter

Step #1 Select Model Data Sets dialog box

Previous work:

A. Prepare custom Data Sets with company-client standardized data

(RevitKeynotes_Metric data structure is a perfect example to follow)

B. Create Shared Parameters* for CODE and DESCRIPTION data storage

C. Add Shared Parameters to Project Parameters

  1. Click Select Model Data Sets button
  2. Browse to select custom Data Sets defined in Previous Work (Step A)
  3. Choose Type or Instance Shared Parameters for CODE and DESCRIPTION data storage
  4. Save rules.
  5. Repeat these steps as needed.

Step #2 Assign Model Data Sets

  1. Click Assign Model Data Sets
  2. Select the custom Data Set you want to work with from the drop down list and click Make Current
  3. Choose data from the Tree view list
  4. In case that CODE and DESCRIPTION data provided in the Data Set do not match the element information you need, user will be able to set custom CODE and DESCRIPTION values but this fields will be marked with an (*) for future reviews and acceptance
  5. Select Elements that you want to set data to: By Filtering or by Multiple Selection
  6. Apply.

More:
An external file with all custom Data Sets rules defined in Step#1 will be created and saved in the same location as the workshared central file or standalone project.

*Optional: Create Read-Only Shared Parameters tool available for free.
